Altruistic Learning

I don’t know if this is a defined educational term, but as the phrase sprung into my head I pondered on the beauty of its concept: Individuals’ learning contributing to a collective good. This can be nurtured by the practice of reciprocity. “But hold on...”, I hear some of you say,” …what are these words ‘Altruistic’ and ‘Reciprocity’?”. These are words sadly not often heard in today's society. Altruism or selflessness is the principle or practice of concern for the welfare of others. Reciprocity, similarly, is the behaviour of people giving each other help and advantages. I often tell my classes that there are 31 teachers in the room. Collaborative learning is a powerful tool. As children support each other, they are also strengthening their own understanding. As the old adage goes: “Better to give than to receive”.
